Amaryllis–Rainnewt guild conspiracy
Cinnamon BunAmaryllis–Rainnewt guild conspiracy names the chain of suspicion linking Amaryllis’s attempted kidnapping to Rainnewt’s unauthorized activity inside the Exploration Guild. The relationship is not presented as a confirmed confession or fully resolved case; it is a developing institutional crisis in which access to information, irregular recruitment, missing officials, and the guild’s treatment of Broccoli Bunch all point toward a betrayal from within. Its decisive significance is that a guild meant to organize protection and exploration becomes the very institution Amaryllis believes may have exposed her to danger.
Suspicion Begins with the Kidnapping Attempt
Amaryllis’s suspicion is grounded in the circumstances surrounding the attack. She explains that the kidnapping attempt was plainly suspicious and insists that it did not come from her family, because her family would not have sent Cervids after her. That exclusion leaves an outside actor responsible, and the circle of possible informants is narrow: Amaryllis believes that only the Exploration Guild and the bank could have known where she was, while only the guild knew where she would be in advance. The distinction matters. The bank may have possessed location information, but the guild possessed advance knowledge of her movements, making the guild the institution with the clearest opportunity to arrange an ambush.
Amaryllis does not treat this as an abstract concern. After returning to Port Royal, she apologizes for losing her temper but immediately explains that she intends to investigate the source of the attack. She expects the director of the guild to greet a team returning from its first mission and regards that absence as another irregularity. Her plan is not merely to complain about poor administration; she wants to determine whether the organization responsible for assigning and protecting expeditions has been compromised.
Rainnewt’s Position in the Chain of Evidence
Rainnewt becomes central to the suspicion because he assigned Broccoli Bunch to Amaryllis as a partner. Broccoli Bunch initially remembers him as a tall, apparently pleasant human clerk or administrator, but Amaryllis corrects that impression: he is not the guild leader, only a paper pusher. Even so, his administrative position gave him practical access to mission arrangements. Broccoli Bunch therefore begins to reconsider his earlier trust, remembering that Rainnewt was the person who arranged the partnership and wondering whether what appeared to be an accident was instead connected to the kidnapping attempt.
The irregularity extends beyond the partnership assignment. Rainnewt accepted Broccoli Bunch into the Exploration Guild without following the proper channels and arranged all of Broccoli Bunch’s missions. That unauthorized authority suggests that he was operating beyond the limits expected of his position. It also explains why the guild’s leadership treats Broccoli Bunch’s membership as defective even though Broccoli Bunch has completed work connected to the guild’s own failures. Rainnewt’s actions have created both a security risk and an administrative vulnerability: he brought in a member improperly, directed that member’s assignments, and may have used the guild’s information network against Amaryllis.
Rainnewt’s disappearance intensifies rather than resolves the matter. When Amaryllis returns to the guild, the lobby is empty, and the secretary says that the returning team is in the lounge with the director. During the confrontation that follows, Mathide asks whether anyone has seen Rainnewt, and the silence of the room supplies no answer. The missing clerk becomes the missing link in the investigation. His absence prevents immediate questioning while making the suspicion harder to dismiss.
The Guild’s Institutional Response
The conspiracy is revealed through a conflict over what should happen to Broccoli Bunch. Mathide orders Gabriel to give Broccoli Bunch standard mission pay and show her out. When Broccoli Bunch asks whether the expulsion is connected to the delayed payment that Rainnewt had said was acceptable, Mathide rejects that explanation and calls Broccoli Bunch a liability who should never have been allowed to join. The guild’s first response is therefore defensive and punitive: remove the irregular member rather than examine the official who admitted her and arranged her missions.
Amaryllis refuses to accept that solution. She explains that Rainnewt admitted Broccoli Bunch outside the proper process, arranged the missions, and has now gone missing; she also states that she believes he attempted to have her kidnapped. In her view, expelling Broccoli Bunch would punish the person who helped correct the guild’s mistakes while leaving the suspected source of those mistakes unexamined. Her anger exposes the institutional contradiction at the center of the crisis: the guild invokes procedure when removing Broccoli Bunch, even though Rainnewt violated procedure when recruiting and deploying her.
Abraham offers a compromise that preserves both immediate safety and the possibility of continued work. Because he is traveling west to Greenshade, he proposes taking Amaryllis and Broccoli Bunch with him and delivering them to the smaller Exploration Guild branch there. Mathide accepts this arrangement and allows Broccoli Bunch to accompany Amaryllis because Amaryllis trusts her. The transfer does not solve the conspiracy, but it separates the two women from the compromised environment and relocates their work to a branch farther from Trenten, where they may be safer while the guild investigates.
Consequences for Amaryllis and Broccoli Bunch
The suspected betrayal changes Amaryllis’s relationship with the guild from professional confidence to guarded scrutiny. She no longer assumes that assignments, schedules, or official greetings are harmless administrative details. The missing director’s expected welcome, Rainnewt’s disappearance, and the unauthorized mission structure all become connected signs that the institution cannot be trusted without verification. Her determination to investigate is therefore both personal and organizational: the attack targeted her, but the evidence threatens the guild’s legitimacy as a whole.
Broccoli Bunch is caught between the benefits and dangers of guild membership. Earlier, the guild’s paperwork promised temporary membership for one month or until certain requirements were fulfilled, along with protections, discounts, reduced travel costs, and reimbursement for food and special equipment. The official expedition summary for Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC, from the Port-Royal Branch, defined the mission as exploring, scouting, and mapping the region around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to a meeting point. These formal structures suggest a system designed to make dangerous travel legible and manageable. Rainnewt’s unauthorized conduct reveals the instability beneath that system: the same paperwork and mission network that provide protection can also expose members when controlled improperly.
Broccoli Bunch’s own development makes the guild’s judgment look increasingly inadequate. Broccoli Bunch first encounters Exploration Guild personnel through practical travel and fieldwork: Grenoil guards regulate entry to outposts, an alchemist named Dylan receives completed quest materials, and guild officials process expedition documents. Broccoli Bunch also gains the general skill Friendmaking after repeatedly performing a Special Action, and later identifies Amaryllis as a friend after surviving dangerous experiences together. Those connections show that Broccoli Bunch’s value is not limited to formal qualifications. Yet Mathide reduces her to a liability, while Amaryllis recognizes that she has already done more to repair the guild’s mistakes than the guild has done to protect her.
An Unresolved Internal Threat
The evidence stops at suspicion, disappearance, and relocation rather than presenting Rainnewt’s confession or a definitive account of his motives. Amaryllis’s reasoning is strong enough to make the guild crisis credible, but the narrative preserves uncertainty: the guild and the bank both had relevant information, Rainnewt is absent, and the organization is still attempting to discover what happened. Mathide’s statement that the guild is good at discovering things turns the institution’s public purpose back upon itself. Exploration, scouting, and mapping are no longer only outward-facing activities; the guild must investigate its own channels and determine whether one of its officials became a spy.
The relationship between Amaryllis and Rainnewt is consequently defined by asymmetry. Amaryllis is the investigator and potential victim, while Rainnewt is the absent administrator whose access and decisions must be reconstructed by others. Their conflict is not a direct duel but a struggle over information: who knew Amaryllis’s location, who knew her schedule, who authorized Broccoli Bunch’s missions, and who benefited from bypassing procedure. Rainnewt’s disappearance prevents closure, leaving the suspected betrayal as an open institutional wound.
The immediate outcome is a fragile protective alliance. Amaryllis confirms that she trusts Broccoli Bunch, Abraham offers transport to Greenshade, and the guild allows the partnership to continue under different supervision. The conspiracy therefore produces an ironic reversal: an attempt to isolate or expel Broccoli Bunch instead strengthens her connection with Amaryllis, while Rainnewt’s unauthorized intervention pushes both women away from the Port Royal branch. What began as a hidden misuse of guild access ends, for the moment, by exposing the guild’s internal fracture and sending the threatened partners toward a new branch where trust must be rebuilt.
